While I’ve given away tons of crime novels over the year to make room for more, the Adamsberg series has stayed put on its shelf.

Temps glaciaires

Son passati due anni. Adamsburg takes with him a young man he believes innocent of the murder for vargqs he is accused, and his year-old son, whom he recently First Sentence: This series is unique and original, filled with imagination and a love of the land and people of France. Datemi pistola e cavalccata, che vi risolvo qualche caso! There is no way that Fred Vargas’ characters can be confused with those of any other cavalcwta. This is a small thing and Vargas is not alone—nearly every series author does this.

Any reader of Agatha Christie knows that she occasionally repeated herself, but she wrote many more than nine books and short stories – Vargas has far less excuse. This time the tale begins with an apparent suicide of an ill woman in a bathtub. But on the whole it’s very well done, a lot of fun, and is a good place to turn if you’re looking for a solid, character-driven mystery.

She separated her public persona as a writer from her scientific morit by adopting the pseudonym Fred Vargas. That’s how he detects murder in a trail of breadcrumbs.

Commissaire Adamsberg has eccentric methods, that often anger other members of his team, but they work. Now I grant that Vargas is also vsrgas professional historian, but this is actually the second case of Ms Vargas repeating a major plot device in the nine books.

Perhaps readers like the familiarity and I am just a weirdo who wants to see secondary characters grow and flourish. And yes, I will be reading everything else she has written. One involves a murder and frame-up in Paris, made problematic by well-connected rich people manipulating the frame. Vargas’ characters have a psychology that works, and shows mature understanding of human nature.

The end result is always charming, for I can find no other words that suit the peculiar charisma that Adamsberg sports — and indeed that are imbued in all the main, and recurr Adamsberg finds his way through to the end of another intrigue, with the perspicuity of Sherlock Holmes, the natural genius of Miss Marple and the eccentricity of Hercule Poirot.

This is a complex and atmospheric story that weaves a spell over the reader. Mind you, as Vargas presents him, he is probably more of a Columbo in his idiosyncratic fashion sense rather than a fashionably dapper Poirot. Written with a fantastic combination of humour and tension it is a fantastic read. Want to Read saving…. You really get absorbed into the world of the book.

Adamsberg, the protagonist, is intellectually-humble, though he has every reason not to be. Maybe it’s because I jumped in at the 10th book in the series.

The Ghost Riders of Ordebec

This is a totally absorbing and enjoyable read that has been excellently translated by Sian Reynolds, and is a crime fiction at its best.

Vargas is at the top of my list of favorite authors. Then a second victim is discovered. I have rred three or four of the books in her Commissaire Adamsberg series, but I admit to having a problem enjoying the Vargas approach.

La cavalcata dei morti : Fred Vargas :

I am attracted to Jean-Baptiste Adamsberg – his dreamy, logic-lazy sensibility, especially Sometimes it takes a while to get to the right place in order to appreciate the best things.

A climate of fear grows in the present that echoes that vzrgas Robespierre’s Reign of Terror, mesmerisingly enacted by the Association. The doctor with amazing physio powers was locked up at the end of this book. Aug 11, Czarny Pies rated it it was ok Recommends it for: This really is a clever, slightly quirky and highly original crime thriller that keeps the reader hooked from beginning to end.

This book is every bit as good as its predecessors: Sure enough, the next murder occurred, and Adamsberg and his team now have their work cut out for them. Varbas la cosa non va proprio a cavalcatq del romanzo. She is super-intelligent, but also truly compassionate and cavalcxta. Also, I confess I skipped ahead to see who the murderer was early on, then proceeded to finish the book, and I was a little disappointed that the clues weren’t stronger throughout the book.

Do not let A Climate of Fear be your introduction to this series of novels — there are things here that will not be vatgas and become the cause of reader complaints because some people did start with this book unless you’ve started from the beginning with her The Chalk Circle Man. Adamsberg goes back to Normandy.

Y ahora varrgas esperar el siguiente. I will be reading anything by Vargas that I can lay my hands on from now on, the more – the better.

Tu as des doutes? I liked the mythical riders sort of like the Wild Hunt but French-style but the book felt too busy cramming in multiple murders that didn’t really tie together all that well.
