The Germans arrive, Peter flees, the Steenwijks are rounded up, their house immediately burned to the ground. I particularly enjoyed two images: For him, the war never ended; he lives with it, bitterly and passionately every day, stoking a hatred that never dies and informs his life in the present, constantly. Names of many children born in the s and s, at asasult height of the struggle against the Marcos dictatorship, carried initials like AS armed struggle or were variations of Karl Marx, Lenin, and Mao.
He eventually meets key people who were involved with or were observers of the episode, and those encounters, along with fragments of his memory that he is able to uncover, permit him to piece together the full story of that night in Haarlem. The Assault is one of the finest pieces of postwar literature you’ll ever read.

A Summary of The Assault by Harry Mulisch

What interests me is what I touched upon in the introduction, which is just how unpredictable life is. Mulisch is not afraid to acknowledge the ruthlessness of people caught in life or death situations.
